Each year on International Day of Happiness, we are invited to pause and consider what happiness really means. In 2026, the focus turns to social media — a tool that connects us, informs us, and sometimes, quietly affects our wellbeing.
Social media has many benefits. It can foster community, provide inspiration, and help us feel less isolated. Yet, for many, scrolling can become habitual in ways that leave us anxious, exhausted, or disconnected. Doomscrolling — the endless consumption of upsetting news or comparisons — often sneaks in unnoticed, influencing our mood and even our sleep.
We rarely pause to notice how online habits shape our thoughts. That quick check of notifications can pull attention from small, grounding moments in daily life. At night, late scrolling can amplify worries, making sleep feel elusive and the mind restless.
Mindfulness offers a gentle way forward. Pausing before opening an app, observing how content affects our mood, and choosing when to engage intentionally can shift our relationship with technology. Small adjustments, like setting phone-free windows or replacing evening scrolling with calming activities, may feel subtle but accumulate meaningfully over time.
Counselling can help navigate this balance. It provides space to reflect on patterns of comparison, self-judgment, and emotional reactivity that often accompany social media use. Therapy does not require abandoning social media. Rather, it encourages conscious engagement and the cultivation of emotional resilience both online and offline.
On this International Day of Happiness, the invitation is simple: notice small moments of joy, curiosity, or calm, and take gentle steps toward protecting them. Happiness is rarely achieved through grand gestures; it often grows quietly through intentional, mindful practices.
